By T LigouriFebruary 26, 2010
On Monday evening our JV Hockey Spartans hosted Wheeling Central and defeated them handily by the score of 5-2. With just one more regular season game left, the Spartans needed to get back into the winning mode before moving on to tier play in quest of a medal.
Joey "Boom Boom" Ligouri got the scoring started just 1:01 into the game cleaning up the garbage in front and putting one past Wheeling goalie John McFarland on an assist by defenseman Wyatt "Earp" Macejka to make it 1-0 Montour. Assistant Captain Adam Holets made it 2-0 Montour at 5:26 of the first on his goal assisted by Nick "Potsy Weber" Potts. "Potsy really works hard out there. We are happy when his hard work pays off," stated Coach Ligouri. Another hard worker forward Dane Testa had to leave the game with an injury when he took a hard board check. Early reports were that Dane would be ok. Montour lead after one 2-0.
Our Spartans went up 3-0 at 5:07 of the second period on a sweet goal scored by EL Capitan Chris Beltz on a beautiful tape to tape pass from Joey Victorelli who skated down the left wing and backhanded a perfect pass to Beltz in the crease. Beltz tipped the puck high into the net for his first of two on the evening. At this point the Spartans decided they would take off the next 5 minutes giving up two goals, one coming with just 0:09 remaining in the period to make the score Montour 3 Wheeling Central 2. " For some reason we have a tendency to lay down during some games. We are up 3-0 and in control and the next thing you know we're fighting for our lives !"
The Spartans would get their act back together in the third period scoring quickly at 1:29 on Beltz second goal assisted again by Victorelli. Sasha Bittner would add a much needed insurance goal at 2:20 of the third on an assist by Ligouri to seal the deal and the win.
Our JV Spartans final regular season game is on Friday March 5th, 2010 at 9:00pm against the Panthers of Upper Saint Clair at the beautiful Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.
