Montour JV Hockey Team Can't Hold On, Lose 3-2 To Big Macs
By T LigouriJanuary 13, 2010
In what proved to be a pre mature celebration with one minute to play in the hockey game, the Montour JV team found out the hard way that you are supposed to play until the final buzzer sounds indicating the game is now over. Leading 2-1 with just a minute to play, our Spartans could not get the puck out of their defensive zone which resulted in two Big Mac goals within 20 seconds to earn the win. The lose drops Montours record to 5 wins-5 loses and 3 ties.
Canon Mac got on the board first at 7:55 of the opening period on a power play goal from Michael Scharf assisted by Zachary Swink. The Spartans tied the game on a shorthanded goal unassisted by Assistant Captain Travis Clark. There would be no more scoring until the third period.
Play was up and down the ice in what was a very entertaining contest that got really interesting with only a minute to play. With 1:50 left Montour called time out to regroup and settle down. 50 seconds later Montour took the lead on a Travis Clark goal assisted by Captain Chris Beltz. At this point it was Canon Macs turn to call timeout and regroup, and boy did they regroup. The Big Mac goalie was pulled in favor of a sixth attacker which resulted in the tying goal with 32.8 ticks remaining. The goal was scored by Blair Oldaker assisted by Scharf. The Big Macs would not settle for the tie and struck again 20 seconds later on a goal by Nicholas Loughlin assisted by Kevin Lawigna to seal the W.
Our Spartans were outshot 29-16 and were penalized 6-1 for a total of 20 minutes to 2 minutes. Not a good recipe for victory especially in a close hard fought game.
The JV Spartans are idle until Friday January 29 when they face off against the Indians of North Hills on the Island at 7:50pm .
