Montour JV Spartans Fit To Be Tied Against Carrick Cougars 2-2
By T LigouriJanuary 10, 2010
On a snowy blustery evening not fit for travel, our Montour Spartan JV Hockey Team made the trek to Ice Castle to take on the Cougars of Carrick who proved to be a very worthy opponent. The Spartans managed to escape losing in the last seconds by tying the score and getting out of the building with a point in the standings. It was not for a lack of offense in which Montour peppered Carrick goalie Josh Brown with 47 shots, 20 of which he stopped in the first period alone. Brown would stop 45 on the evening.
Carrick put one in the scoring column at 4:32 of the first on a powerplay goal scored by Bryton Tomko assisted by Captain Gino Oliverio to make it 1-0. The Spartans would not get the equalizer until 10:17 of the second period on a goal from newly appointed Assistant Captain Adam Holets assisted by freshman call up Brian Luebbe. Holets shot from the top of the circle found its way through a maze of players and past Brown who had been impossible to beat to this point.
The score stayed tied until 10:13 of the third period when Carricks Tomko got his second of the evening by poking a loose puck past Montour goalie Nate Thomas who attempted to cover up in the crease. Tomkos effort paid off as the officials ruled the puck was not frozen and the score read 2-1 Cougars. As time ticked down it looked as if our Spartans would go down in defeat in the first game after a long holiday break. With 38 seconds remaining the Spartans pulled goalie Nate Thomas for the extra offensive attacker. This move would pay dividends. With 12 ticks remaining Montour Assistant Captain Travis Clark scored an unassisted goal to earn the Spartans the tie. The JV Spartans still post a winning record of 5 wins 4 loses and 3 ties.
The JV Spartans next opponent will be the always tough Big Macs of Canon McMillan on Monday January 11, 2010 on the Island. The puck drops at 7:30pm. All three Spartan teams are in the building to play on Monday so come on down and enjoy the action.
