Bethel Park Blackhawks Top JV Spartans In Wild One 2-1

By T Ligouri
December 23, 2009
When a team has twice the amount of penalties as the other team and gets outshot 47-17 you would expect that team took a tail whipping not suited for a game article. That was the case on Monday night on the Island as our JV Spartans went down to Bethel Park in a close one 2-1. Montour fought through the obstacles thrown in front of them and goalie Jim Brutt played another fabulous game to keep the Spartans close enough to nearly pull it out down the stretch.

Bethel Park went up 1-0 on a power play goal at 5:33 of the first period. Scoring was Blackhawk Captain Jim Cullen assisted by Dan Yost. There would be no more scoring until the third, but plenty of penalty minutes were handed out including 4 minors to our Spartans in the second period alone. "Its hard to play 4 on 5 for an entire period and stay in sync. It throws off your line scheme and your game plan, but we hung in the best we could", stated Coach Ligouri. "Our team has a lot of guts."

Bethel Park would increase their lead to 2-0 at 8:03 of the third period on Cullens second of the game assisted by Michael Cure. This goal would have put most teams away with only 3:57 remaining. After Head Coach Jim Leja was ejected from the game for displaying his displeasure at the style of officiating by officials Bilski and Kubacki, the Spartans got on the board at 9:42 on an unassisted goal by Assistant Captain Travis Clark . Clark took the puck down the middle of the offensive zone and unleashed a blast that went over the Blackhawk goalies shoulder to get the Spartans back in it with seemingly lots of time left. A few seconds after the puck was dropped the game was halted due to curfew time and our Spartans were defeated 2-1.
