Montour JV Hockey Team Wins Again ! Posts 5-2-2 Record at Mid Season Mark
By T LigouriDecember 08, 2009
It wasn't pretty but the Montour JV Hockey Team did what it had to do to preserve a 3-2 lead over the pesky South Park Eagles and eventually went on to win by the same score to improve their record to 5 wins, 2 loses, and 2 ties half way through the 2009-2010 season. Last nights win also capped off an evening that saw all three Spartan hockey teams toast victory with the freshman bunch whoopin the Center Trojans 7-0, and our varsity squad squeaking by the always tough Bulldogs of Meadville, in Meadville 2-1. It was indeed a good night for Montour Spartan hockey.
The Eagles came out soaring early and scored a minute and a half into the game on an unassisted goal by Assistant Captain Mike Knetzer. Knetzer cruized down the left side and sniped the cage with a hard wrister over the shoulder of Spartan goalie Nate Thomas. The Spartans tied the score at 8:46 of the first on a call up crew goal scored by Brian Lubbe assisted by Brian Gerstal and Eric Holets. All three players involved in the goal were players moved up from the freshman squad to bolster the JV lineup. They work well together. The fourth call up is defenseman Wyatt Macejka who adds strength and stability to the JV team as well. South Park took the lead again at 10:28 on a goal scored by Assistant Captain Ryan DeDominicis assisted by Captain Cam Sabatini. That was all the scoring the Eagles could muster and Montour went to work. Just 8 seconds later an unassisted goal by Assistant Captain Brian Boyle tied the score at two to end a long first period.
At 6:05 of the second period Montour scored the eventual game winner when forwards Captain Chris Beltz and Assistant Captain Travis Clark broke out on a two on one towards the offensive zone. Beltz delivered a perfect pass onto the tape of Clarks stick and Travis scored the game winner in a period that saw Montour outshoot South Park 12-3. South Park goalie Joey Recktenwald was clearly the difference between a tight game and a blowout.
The third period was scoreless end to end hockey with South Park having a couple of late opportunities once hitting the post midway through the period and a hard shot from the point at the buzzer. But at the end of the day our Spartans prevailed.
The second half of the season will see our Spartans take on some tougher opponents such as Moon, Bethel Park, Canon Mac(twice), Mt Lebo, and Upper Saint Clair. "If the boys continue to work hard and buy into the team concept, we can compete with these larger schools. If they want to be individualists then we will all pay the price."
Next game-Tuesday December 15 at 7:00pm against Moon at the Airport Ice Arena.
