Montour JV Spartans Start Fast Hold On For 4-2 win Over Baldwin

By T Ligouri
November 24, 2009
The Montour JV Spartan hockey team started out last nights game against the Highlanders  of Baldwin in such a scoring flurry it appeared it would be a blowout. But Baldwin regrouped after being down 3-0 and made a game of it eventually bowing to the  "Cardiac Kids" 4-2.

The Spartans came out of the shoot and scored just 17 seconds into the game on a play designed minutes before game time in the locker room. "I asked Coach Leja if I could try something" stated Coach Ligouri. "Since we haven't won an opening faceoff since Moses wore short pants, I suggested forward Assistant Captain Travis Clark take the faceoff and push it forward busting past the Baldwin center. Both wings also take off into the offensive zone. It worked like a charm with Joey Ligouri scoring on assists from Clark and Captain Chris Beltz. It was just something I noticed Clarky doing in practice and it worked. Montour made it 2-0 22 seconds later on a powerplay goal by Assistant Captain Austin Kronz assisted by Brian Boyle.  At 3:40 of the first Adam Jaworski tallied assisted by Boyle again to make it 3-0 and it looked like this one would be a laugher. Well, at 7:40 of the first the Baldwin bench alarm clock must have gone off and the Highlanders went to work. Captain Zach Alaimo took things into his own hands weaving through the Montour defense and scored a nice unassisted goal to tighten the gap at 3-1.  Baldwin wasn't finished though scoring again at 8:49 on another unassisted goal by Mike"The State of" Michigan to make it Montour 3 Baldwin 2 after one.

After a scoreless second period the Spartans scored their second powerplay goal of the evening at 4:47 of the third to seal the deal when Kronz fired one from the right point beating Baldwin goaltender Leyland Mudispacher high on an assist from Clark to make the final Montour 4 Baldwin 2. "Our powerplay has really been clicking so far this season. Its fun to watch"

The Spartan JV record improves to 4 wins 2 loses and 2 ties and faces off next Monday, December 7, 2009 at 8:50pm on the "Island" against the Eagles of South Park to end the first half of the season. Be there to cheer the JV Spartans on to victory !
